Think twice before washing your jacket to save the environment. Often all you need to do to regain that fresh feeling is hang it to air outside.
Individual stains do not mean that the whole jacket is dirty and needs to be washed. Stains can easily be removed manually with an ecological stain remover without any fragrance or lotion. Rub it onto the stain and leave it for about half an hour. Then rinse well. Just make sure not to rub the fabric too hard since it can wear the fabric and damage the impregnation.
It´s important not to overload your washing machine. An overloaded machine will disrupt the spin cycle and might leave you with wet and dirty clothes. If the garment is too large for your washing machine, please leave it to a professional wet cleaner with bigger machines available. However, its equally important not to underload the machine as this wastes water, energy and detergent.
It´s always important to read and follow the care label inside the garment. Many of our jackets have instruction “wash separately”.
It’s unlikely that your jacket will be any cleaner if you wash it in hot water instead of warm. 30°C is often enough, and washing in 30°C gentle is better for preserving the jackets padding. Lower temperatures and a gentle cycle will prolong the lifecycle of the jacket when it comes to fibres and colours.
Further tips to protect your jacket are to fasten all the locks, pockets, buttons and Velcro tape before washing as these may cause damage to the fabric. To protect the colour the jacket should also be turned inside out prior to washing and it should not be left in the washing machine too long after washing.
Do not use fabric softener since it impairs the technological functions of the jacket. Actually, fabric softeners are pretty bad all together. Neither friendly to the environment nor your personal health.
Chose an ecological liquid detergent. Ecological washing liquids do not contain surfactants, which cause harm to the environment. Don’t use more washing liquid than necessary. Try with half the dose and increase gradually if needed.
Using liquid detergent is preferable for your jacket as it distributes more evenly in the washing machine compared to powdered detergent. This reduces the risk of the jacket becoming bleached or discolored due to excessive detergent in one spot.
Avoid tumble-drying the jacket. The mechanical stress and the heat from the tumble-dryer wear down the colours and the fibres. Instead, let the jacket air-dry, which is also better for the environment.
Further tip is to add heat from an iron or blow dryer. This will re-activate the water repellent finish on the surface of the jacket, which will make water pearl off the jacket better.
However, it is always important to read the care label inside the jacket.
Make do and mend is a motto we love. Because holes, buttons and broken seams can be easily fixed with a needle and thread. For more challenging repairs, find yourself a tailor and you and your ELVINE jacket will spend many more happy winters together. In Sweden, we recommend our friends at Fabrikörerna.
By following these rules, the lifecycle of your functional city jacket can be extended by several years. This is beneficial for the jacket and the environment as well as your wallet. But remember to always follow the instructions on the care label inside the jacket before washing since different textiles, membranes and paddings may require different care and maintenance.
