How to Store Your Jacket for Next Season

Spring is here, and it’s time to swap heavy winter coats for lighter layers. But before you toss your jacket into the back of the closet, take a moment to store it properly—future you will thank you when the temperatures drop again. So, how do you keep your jacket fresh, clean, and ready for next winter? Here’s everything you need to know.

1. Clean
Before You Store

Would you put away dirty dishes in the cupboard? Probably not. The same rule applies to your winter jacket. Dirt, sweat, and city grime can break down fabrics over time, so make sure to freshen up your jacket before storing it. Follow the care label instructions—some jackets need a gentle wash, while others prefer a trip to the dry cleaner. However, in most cases, airing out your jacket outdoors and wiping off any dirt is enough, saving both the environment and your energy!

2. Dry It
Completely

Damp jackets are a breeding ground for mold and bad smells, and no one wants to start the next winter wrapped in mustiness. Hang your jacket to dry completely before storing it.

3. Choose the Right Storage Spot

Where you store your jacket matters. A damp basement or a stuffy attic? Not ideal. Aim for a cool, dry place with good ventilation. If possible, use a breathable garment bag to protect it from dust while allowing air to circulate.

4. Hang or Fold?

Puffer jacket? Store it loosely in a fabric bag or a large drawer to maintain its shape. Wool coat? Hang it on a sturdy, padded hanger to prevent shoulder bumps. Whatever you do, avoid plastic bags—they trap moisture and can lead to mildew.

5. Keep Pests Away

Moths love wool, and they’re not picky about designer labels. If your jacket contains natural fibers, consider using cedar blocks or lavender sachets to keep unwanted visitors at bay. No toxic mothballs needed!

6. Check In Occasionally

Out of sight shouldn’t mean out of mind. Give your stored jackets a quick check every now and then to make sure they’re holding up well. A little airing out mid-season never hurts.
By following these simple steps, you’ll ensure your jacket stays in top shape and is ready to take on the cold again—whenever winter decides to return.

Happy Storing!
